Laurent and Isabelle Coustal are the consummate viticulturalists, winemakers, and artisans at Château Sainte Eulalie where they fashion several traditional wines from old vines, including, this month’s special feature, the 2023 Plaisir d’Eulalie. Produced from Syrah, Grenache, and Carignan vines in excess of 50 years of age, the three traditional and most important grape varietals of Languedoc and the Southern Rhône, the 2023 Plaisir d’Eulalie emanates from stony terraces high above the village of La Livinière. Located in the heart of the Minervois appellation, France’s oldest continuously producing wine region, La Livinière has long been regarded as the Languedoc’s finest appellation, and since 2018 La Livinière has enjoyed official Cru de Languedoc status – the first Cru of Languedoc. Château Sainte Eulalie practices organic viticulture and is Certified Sustainable. Château Sainte Eulalie has also been awarded the distinction of High Environmental Value from the EU – a difficult feat and a highly coveted distinction.
Tasting Notes: The 2024 Plaisir d’Eulalie from organic Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan grapes is picked entirely by hand and bottled unfiltered in order to preserve freshness and flavor. It offers juicy, pleasure, and extraordinary value. It outshines most Côtes-du-Rhône and GSM wines with its pure fruit flavors and clean, lithe spirit – our candidate for this year’s finest house red wine. Serve it cool anytime, anywhere, with everything, or with nothing at all. Best of all, it’s easy on the head and wallet and pairs well with cassoulet, poultry, pizza, and all forms of comfort food.
